Booked a hostel private room instead of a hotel in Bangkok... kind of regret it

I spent $45 a night on a 'private room' at a hostel in Khao San Road thinking I'd save cash and still get sleep. Turns out the walls are paper thin and I heard someone's entire hookup saga at 2am. Has anyone actually found a quiet hostel private room or is it all a lie?

And like, how do you even KNOW if you're actually helping or just being a sounding board for someone who has zero intention of ever changing? I've been in that spot where you give advice, they nod along, then next week it's the SAME story with different names. At what point do you just say "I can't do this anymore" and walk away without feeling like a jerk?

@valh32 nailed it with the sounding board thing. My buddy once spent a whole weekend listening to a guy complain about his job, only to find out he'd been fired six months ago and was just repeating himself every time they drank.
