Warning: my neighbor's cheap insulation fix cost me $600 in repairs

I was chatting with my neighbor Rick last Tuesday while we were both out watering our plants. He told me he saved like $200 by stuffing old fiberglass scraps around his attic pipes instead of paying for proper foam. Two days later his brand new water heater developed a leak from condensation damage and now he's looking at a much bigger bill. Has anyone else seen cheap diy fixes actually create bigger problems like this?

That part about fiberglass "not sealing out moisture" really hit home for me. I used to think any insulation was better than none, but I never considered how trapping humidity against cold pipes would just create a drip factory. I'm definitely going to be more careful about picking the right materials instead of just grabbing whatever's cheapest next time.

Yeah, condensation on water heater tanks is no joke. I had a similar thing happen with my own setup where I cut corners on pipe insulation and ended up with a puddle that ruined the floorboards underneath. That fiberglass scraps trick might stop some heat loss but it doesn't seal out moisture, so all that humidity just settles on cold pipes and drips. Cost me about $400 to replace the subfloor and have a plumber redo everything the right way. Foam sleeves with proper vapor barriers are like $30 for a whole roll, way cheaper than fixing water damage later.
