TIL my grandma's 'depression soup' actually had a real name
I was looking up old cookbooks online and found out that what my grandma called 'depression soup' is basically a budget minestrone from the 1930s. It's just water, canned tomatoes, whatever beans are on hand, and any veggie scraps you got, all simmered for an hour. Has anyone else run into a family recipe that turned out to be a classic?

That soup is basically what my aunt called "pantry soup" she made when money was tight. Funny how so many families had their own version of the same thing.

Pantry soup" is a perfect name for it.

Grandma's 1930s budget minestrone, @charlienelson, isn't a classic family recipe, it's just peasant food.
