The $25 knife sharpener I used for 2 years vs the $100 one I bought last week is night and day

I've been using this cheap pull-through sharpener from the grocery store for probably 2 years, thinking it was fine for my kitchen knives. Last week I finally broke down and got a decent whetstone setup for about 100 bucks. First time I used it on my old chef's knife I could actually slice through a tomato without crushing it. The cheap one was just grinding metal off unevenly and making the edge worse over time. I didn't realize how dull my knives had gotten until I had a real edge on them. Has anyone else had a sharpener upgrade like that where the difference was way bigger than you expected?

Have you noticed how a sharp knife actually changes how you cook, like you start enjoying prep work more? Tbh, that $100 upgrade is one of those things where you don't realize how bad the old setup was until you try the good one. The cheap pull-through sharpeners are basically just metal shredders over time, they make the edge look shiny but really they're ruining the geometry of the blade. Once you get a consistent angle with a whetstone, everything changes because you're actually cutting steel instead of grinding it off unevenly. Ngl, I'd bet your knives have a lot more life in them now that you're not just scraping away metal every time you sharpen.

also nobody talks about how a sharp knife is way safer cause the blade bites into the food instead of bouncing off and sliding toward your fingers. that peace of mind alone makes prep way more enjoyable.

Grab a cheap angle guide to keep your stone consistent until you build muscle memory.
