Warning: that $150 air purifier I bought was a complete waste

I got roped into buying a fancy air purifier for my living room back in March. The box said it could handle a 500 square foot space and had a HEPA filter and all that. Cost me $150 from a big online store. After three months of running it nonstop, I looked at the filter and it was basically clean. Meanwhile my allergies were still just as bad as before. What finally convinced me I messed up was talking to a buddy who works in HVAC. He told me most of those consumer grade units barely move enough air to matter unless you're in a tiny room with the door shut. Now I'm thinking I should have just put that money toward better insulation or sealing up drafts in my apartment. Anyone else fall for a gadget that looked good on paper but did nothing in real life?

Man that's the thing with so many consumer gadgets nowadays, they're designed to look impressive on a shelf but the actual engineering is just fluff. It's like buying a fancy water bottle that claims to keep ice cold for 48 hours but still sweats all over your desk.

@ryan_ellis right? It's all about that unboxing experience, not if the thing actually works past the first week.
