Stop buttering the whole bed before checking the level, that's rookie stuff

Saw a guy on a patio job in Phoenix last week lay 40 feet of bed mortar and then start setting block. By the time he got to the end, the mud was crusted and he was fighting the level on every single course. I called him out and he said it was faster. Faster to redo? I've been doing this 15 years and if you don't spot check at least every 10 feet before you commit, you're just building a headache. Who here actually sets a full bed ahead and makes it work, or are we all playing it safe course by course?

Used to think buttering a whole bed was just being fast. Then watched a guy do that on a commercial job, same crusty mess. You're right, spot check every 10 feet or you're just paying for it later.
