I used to bottom water every single one of my plants until I almost lost a rare Hoya last winter

I spent 3 years religiously bottom watering everything from pothos to succulents, but my Hoya carnosa compacta got root rot even though I was doing everything "right". Now I only bottom water plants with deep root systems and top water my compact Hoyas - anyone else adjust their watering method by species after a close call?

Oh man, my friend Jenny nearly killed her variegated string of pearls the same way. She swore by bottom watering for everything until she left them sitting too long one time and they just rotted from the bottom up. Now she only bottom waters plants with bigger pots and deeper roots like her ZZ plants and snake plants. For her trailing succulents and anything with shallow roots she uses a turkey baster to water right at the soil surface. She says it took her almost losing that string of pearls to realize one method doesn't fit all plants. Now she keeps a little notebook where she writes which watering method works best for each plant.

Nah man, just water less often. Problem solved.
