Found a plant growing in my air conditioner vent last month
I went to turn on my AC last week and heard this weird rustling sound. Pulled off the vent cover and there was a little fern growing inside the ductwork, probably three inches tall with actual roots. I have no idea how it got there or how long it had been living off the humidity and dust. My roommate joked that I should start a vertical garden business in our ventilation system. Has anyone else found plants growing in super weird spots like this?

@jake_owens hit on something, that basement tomato story is wild but an AC vent fern probably takes the cake for sheer improbability. That rustling sound would've freaked me out too, thinking something was nesting in there. A fern living off AC condensation and dust bunnies is basically nature's version of making lemonade from nothing. You should check the drip pan underneath, sometimes those stay damp enough to grow moss or even little sprouts like the one you found. Could be a whole ecosystem living in your ductwork that you just haven't seen yet.

Dude that's wild. My buddy once found a tomato plant growing out of a crack in his basement floor, like right next to the sump pump. He said it was almost a foot tall before he noticed it. We figured a seed must have washed in during a flood or something. Nature finds a way, I guess. Yours is way weirder though, an AC vent is like the last place you'd expect a fern to just show up.
