Warning: The 240p rip of The Thing I grabbed from a Russian forum had the wrong audio track until I changed one setting in VLC
If your bootleg copy sounds like the actors are underwater or in a tunnel, open VLC, hit Tools > Track Synchronization, and slide the audio delay to about -350 ms, because that fixed my copy of The Thing in like 10 seconds after I spent a week thinking the rip was just junk.

Wait, a whole week?! You sat there thinking that rip was garbage for seven days when it was just a delay setting the whole time? That is brutal. I would have given up on day two and deleted the file for sure.
