That 'restored' VHS of the 1980 Godzilla cut was a dead tape in a new shell
Grabbed a supposedly mint copy of the rare 1980 dubbed version on eBay for $45, seller swore it played great. Popped it in and got 20 minutes of static before the picture started rolling like a drunk wave. Took the shell apart and found the original reel was spliced with packing tape and had mold spots near the core. Guess I should've asked for a timestamp photo before handing over the cash, but who does that for a bootleg? Anyone else get burned on a 'sealed' tape that was just a rehousing job?
$45 for a known bootleg is a gamble you took, and the seller played you like a fiddle on that timestamp lie. How many times have you actually run that tape through a full playback, or did you just trust the 20 minute test and call it good? I'm curious if the mold spots near the core were visible before you opened it, because that's the kind of damage that makes a tape worthless no matter how clean the shell looks.
