Wasted $80 on a 'authoritative' book club pick that nobody finished

I pushed for this dense 500-page history book for our monthly book club chat because the reviews said it was a 'must-read.' Paid $80 for a hardcover copy and only made it through chapter three before giving up. Anyone else regret trusting those overhyped recommendations for your group?

Heard the exact same thing happen to my buddy Marcus last year. He bought that big "The Dawn of Everything" hardcover for like $70 after everyone online swore it was life changing. He got maybe 50 pages in before it ended up as a doorstop in his apartment. Tried to resell it on Facebook Marketplace and nobody wanted it either. Now he just borrows books from the library first before buying anything fancy.

My own bookshelf is basically a graveyard of books I swear I'll finish someday.
