The library director in Omaha told me most of my book club never finishes the book, and I checked the numbers myself
Last week I ran into the woman who runs the book club at the Benson branch library in Omaha, and she said something that stopped me cold. She said the average member reads less than 60 pages before meeting night. I thought she was joking, so I started asking people at our own club, which has been meeting since 2019. Out of 14 regulars, only 4 had finished our pick for that meeting, and 3 admitted they had not opened it past the first chapter. I have been the guy pushing for big 500 page novels for two years, and it turns out half the group was just nodding along at my questions. She told me the clubs that last are the ones that pick books under 300 pages and stop pretending everyone does the reading. Now I am the one arguing we should quit acting like a serious literary circle and just pick shorter books so people can actually talk. Does your club have real talk about who reads the book, or does everyone just fake it like mine did?
