That time my book club nearly fell apart over a single chapter

Two months ago we were reading "The Vanishing Half" and got stuck on chapter 12. Half the group thought the twins' reunion scene was the best part of the book. The other half said it was lazy writing and ruined the whole story. We spent 45 minutes going back and forth. By the end two people said they wouldn't come back if we picked another book by that author. I had to step in as moderator and say we should vote on next month's pick instead. Has anyone else had a book club argument get that personal and heated?

Oh man, I've been there. Best thing you can do is pick a totally different genre for the next book to reset the group dynamic and remind everyone you're there to have fun, not to fight.

I have to push back on the silly mystery idea. I think that approach can actually make things worse. When you pick something too light or goofy, it can feel like you're making fun of the whole book club concept. I've seen groups where people felt like their serious opinions were being mocked after something like that. A better move is to address the tension head on by choosing a book with clear moral questions that force a real discussion. That way everyone has to engage with the material instead of just laughing off the past problems.
