That book club meeting at the coffee shop on Main Street got way too heated over a minor character

I went to my usual book club meetup at Brew House on Main Street last Tuesday, and a lady named Sarah almost walked out because someone said they didn't like a character named Tom in our current read. She claimed Tom was the 'emotional backbone' of the whole story, but I just thought he was boring and whiny. The whole group split into two sides and we spent like 45 minutes arguing about whether he was necessary or just filler. The worst part is that our host, Jenny, kept trying to change the topic and nobody listened. I get that people get attached to characters, but this felt like way too much drama for a Tuesday night. Has anyone else had a book club meeting spiral out over something that small?

Last year I just started a new topic and refused to engage.

lol wait, you just straight up ghosted your own thread and started a new one? That's a power move honestly. People were probably still mid-argument and you just dipped out like "okay moving on" haha. I respect the chaos of that approach.
