I finally finished a book club pick that took me 3 months longer than everyone else

Our group picked 'The Priory of the Orange Tree' back in January and I just finished it last week. It's 800 pages and I honestly didn't expect that massive world building part in the middle where nothing happens for like 200 pages. I kept putting it down to read lighter stuff and then felt guilty every meeting. The discussion was long over by the time I got to the ending, so I couldn't even talk about the dragon plot twist with anyone. Has anyone else lagged way behind on a chunky fantasy book and just had to accept you'll miss the group chat?

You're being way too generous about this @taylor_hayes25. Six months late is not "just a little behind" in any book club. That's a whole different season of life. I mean seriously, by that point everyone has moved on to like three other books and the conversation is dead. It feels more like showing up to a party the next morning and asking where the chips went. Respectfully, I think that's more about bad planning than just a simple mix up.
