That cheap TIG torch I bought on clearance actually held up for 6 months
I picked up a knockoff gas lens kit for $35 off eBay last March, fully expecting it to fall apart after a week. It’s still going strong after 300+ hours of stainless pipe work and shows no signs of cracking or overheating. Anybody else get surprised by budget gear that just won’t quit?

Jump right in and tell me about it. I've noticed the same thing with almost every category of tool I own, not just welding gear. My bench grinder from Harbor Freight cost me $40 and it's been running smooth for four years straight, no wobble, no smoke. Meanwhile my neighbor's DeWalt drill crapped out after a year because the chuck jammed up. It's like the cheap stuff is made with fewer moving parts to break, but the fancy brands overcomplicate things just to justify the price tag. The real pattern I see is that durability doesn't always match cost, sometimes it's just luck or design simplicity.

Read a forum post where a guy got 2 years out of a $50 welder.

@sageross nailed it with the simplicity point. That $50 welder likely has a basic transformer and a few diodes, nothing fancy to fail. Two years out of fifty bucks is honestly impressive when you think about it. My buddy bought a Miller for $1,200 and had to replace the wire feed assembly after 18 months. The cheap stuff just works because there's less stuff to go wrong. I'm not saying everyone should buy the bottom shelf, but that guy got his money's worth and then some.
