Back in the day we used to hand roll all our gaskets for the big steam drums. Now I just cut them from sheet stock with a template. The old way wasted half a Saturday.

Wait, are you saying rolling gaskets by hand was actually better than using a template? I've cut enough gaskets from sheet stock to know it saves way more than half a Saturday once you get the hang of a good template. The old way meant blending and sanding edges for hours to get a proper seal, and even then you'd sometimes get a leak that needed reworking. With a template, I can knock out a perfect match in ten minutes flat. Sure, hand rolling has its charm and you feel like a real craftsman, but I'd rather spend that time checking steam drum pressure or fixing something else that actually matters.
