I used to think strategy games were boring until I tried one with a real group

For years I only played solo board games like Pandemic by myself. Then last month my nephew dragged me to a Thursday night meetup at the local library. Watching six people argue over a single move in Scythe made me see the fun in it. Now I go every week and I can't believe I missed out for so long. Has anyone else had a bad first impression that totally flipped after playing with the right people?

You mean like playing Risk with people who take it way too seriously versus just laughing at the dice? That's the whole deal honestly, find a group that treats it like hanging out with a board on the table instead of a competition and suddenly everything clicks.

Ever try just letting someone else "win" early just to see if the vibe shifts? I've done that before and suddenly everyone's joking around because the stakes feel lower. It's weird but sometimes you gotta be the one who breaks the tension first lol.

Man, I used to be all about going hard every time no matter the game, but @jordan_young's point about treating it like hanging out with a board totally clicked for me last week. Letting someone else take a win early actually made the night way more fun, I was surprised.
