Found a weird way to get my group to actually finish a game of Twilight Imperium

We always got stuck around turn 4 because someone would take forever on their move. Last week, I set a simple kitchen timer for 5 minutes per player turn and put it in the middle of the table. If it went off, you had to finish your action in 30 seconds or pass. We finished the whole 8-hour game in one sitting for the first time ever. It felt a bit harsh, but it worked. Has anyone else tried a timer trick for long games, or does that just make it stressful?

How do you even get through a full game without a timer? My old group had the same problem with Scythe, where one guy would just stare at his player board forever. We started using the timer on someone's phone, and yeah it felt a little mean at first, but it stopped the game from dragging on for ten hours. The stress of the clock was way less than the stress of watching someone think for twenty minutes. Honestly, it just makes everyone play faster and care less about perfect moves, which is more fun.

Totally feel this. We had to do the same thing with Terraforming Mars because one friend would overthink every single card buy. Honestly the timer made the game way more fun for everyone, even him.
