That moment in my shop when I stopped blaming the tool for my own bad habit

Three weeks ago I was on my third sanding belt in one afternoon at my garage in Akron. Kept telling my buddy the sander was junk. He looked over and said, you're pressing way too hard, back off and let the tool do the work. I thought it was a soft move, but I tried it. First pass felt slower. Second pass was smooth. Belt lasted four hours after that. I realized I'd been doing that for the last two years, ever since I got the thing. Made me wonder what else I've been fighting that isn't actually fighting back. Anyone else had a tool that taught you a basic lesson way later than it should have? What was yours?
