The old smith in Tulsa said my welds looked like 'a chicken walked on hot metal,' and I finally got what he meant
Last week I showed a retired smith in Tulsa a fire poker I'd forge welded, and he didn't say a word about heat or flux, just asked how it felt when the hammer hit. I said it felt dead and mushy, and he nodded and said my steel was too cold before the weld even started. I'd been chasing the right color for two months, but he was listening to the sound, not looking at the glow. Now I tap the billet on the anvil before every pass and it tells me more than my eyes ever did. Does anyone else rely on sound over sight for reading heat, or am I late to this?
