Showerthought: A roadside smithy in Ireland fixed my hammer grip issue.

On a driving tour last summer, I stopped at a working forge in County Clare. The smith showed me his way of holding the hammer, with the thumb along the handle instead of wrapped around. I tried it back home and found it gives much better control for detailed scroll work. It's a small change, but it made a big difference in my precision.

My old shop teacher called that the "guide thumb" grip. He said it came from watchmakers originally, where you need a light touch. It really does help with fine control.

That's such a cool little tip to pick up on the road. It's amazing how those tiny adjustments to your grip can change everything. Makes you realize how much craft knowledge is still passed down in places like that.

Wow, my grandpa did woodworking the same way, thumb along the handle.
