The shift in my local library's book selection over 3 years is hard to ignore

I used to go to the downtown branch in Portland pretty regularly, like twice a month. About 3 years ago, I noticed the non-fiction section started shrinking, and they replaced a lot of it with young adult fantasy and graphic novels. Now, over half the new arrivals are either romance or self-help stuff, and the older political or history books are gone. I asked a librarian about it, and she said they just buy what 'checks out most,' but it feels like they're dumbing things down on purpose. Has anyone else seen their library shift away from serious topics, or is it just my area?

It mirrors how grocery stores push candy at the checkout now.

Friend of mine went to a store last week to grab one thing, ended up with a bag of gummy bears and some chocolate bar because she was waiting in line. She didn't even want candy, but it's right there in your face while you're trying to pay. That checkout strategy works way too well on people.
