My daughter's school banned the word 'grit' in PE class, and I think the principal is dead wrong about why
So my kid comes home from 7th grade PE in Boise last Tuesday and says her teacher got pulled aside for telling the class that being tough when you're tired matters. The principal sent out an email that day saying the word 'grit' is banned because it pushes kids too hard. I coach youth sports on weekends and I'm here to say the kids who quit when it gets hard at 12 are the same ones who quit everything at 25. We're so scared of making a kid feel bad for 10 minutes that we're raising a generation who never learns how to push through anything. What's your take, is calling it 'grit' really that harmful, or are we just avoiding hard conversations?
Banning a word is just plain silly. Grit is not a bad thing, it is what gets you through math tests, jobs, and life in general. Kids need to learn that hard stuff is worth doing even when they want to quit, and that lesson lasts forever. The principal probably means well, but acting like a single word will break a kid is way off base. Letting a kid struggle a little is how they grow, not how they get hurt.
