PSA: If your card keeps getting declined at the pump, try running it as credit instead of debit
This happened to me twice in the same week at a Shell station near my place in Tucson. I kept getting that "see cashier" message even though I had over $400 in my checking account. I figured my bank had flagged something, so I called them and sat on hold for 20 minutes. The rep explained that my card was set up to run as debit by default, and some gas stations put a $75 to $100 hold on debit transactions to make sure you can cover the fill up. The problem was my daily debit limit is $300, so a big hold plus my other spending that day was bumping me over. She told me to hit the credit button at the pump instead, which skips the PIN and doesn't tie up my money the same way. I tried it the next morning and it went through on the first try. Has anyone else run into this with their bank, or is it just how my account is set up?
