I finally saw my annual Venmo total and it was over $8,000.

It's almost all for small stuff like coffee and food, which makes me think I should use my debit card more for those. Does anyone else get shocked by their peer-to-peer app totals?

My buddy had the same shock last month. He checked his CashApp history and it was just pages of five dollar burrito splits and three dollar coffee rounds. He said it felt like digital loose change falling out of his pocket every day. Now he tries to use cash for anything under ten bucks just to see it leave his hand.

Man, that's so true. It's like the friction of paying is gone, so your brain doesn't even register it as a real purchase. I bet if his phone made a loud cash register "cha-ching" sound for every single one of those tiny payments, he'd stop doing it real quick.

Take it a step further and make him review every single charge out loud to his partner before he hits confirm. That shame factor (you know, the "babe, I swear it was just a coffee two hours ago") would probably kill the habit even faster than a sound effect.
