The buttercream at that famous bakery in Portland was a total letdown

Stopped by that place everyone raves about on Hawthorne last Saturday, the one with the line out the door. Paid $7 for a cupcake and the frosting was gritty, tasted like straight powdered sugar with zero salt or vanilla. I know people swear by their stuff but honestly my box mix buttercream at home is smoother. Am I missing something or did I just catch them on a bad day?

Gritty buttercream is an instant dealbreaker. That famous spot must be rushing batches or skipping the sifting step. Seven bucks for that is robbery, honestly. Bad days happen but texture like that usually means they don't care that day. Sounds like you got the tourist version of their cupcake.
