I just hit 500 sourdough loaves with my starter and it feels weird
I keep a little notebook by my oven and I finally filled the last line on the page yesterday. 500 loaves, all from the same starter I began three years ago. It's not even a special number, but seeing it written down hit me. That's 500 times I've fed it, 500 folds, 500 bakes where I held my breath for the oven spring. I thought I'd feel proud, but honestly I just feel kind of tired. It's a lot of work for something people just eat with soup. Has anyone else hit a random baking number that made you stop and think?

Just work for soup"? Isn't that the whole beautiful point, that you made something real for people to enjoy?

Right? That feeling is honestly the best part of the job.

It's such a simple thing but it really does make everything worth it, doesn't it?

You know what, you're absolutely right. I was just busting chops with the soup thing, but honestly that's the whole dang point, isn't it? There's something really special about cooking up food that people actually want to eat. @the_rowan gets it too, they mentioned that feeling being the best part. I'm just a goof who shows up and assembles food for a crowd, but sometimes I forget that even a simple bowl of soup can make someone's day better. Heck, one time I burned toast so bad it set off the fire alarm, so I'm not exactly a master chef here. Still, when someone says they enjoyed what I threw together, it makes all the little mess ups worth it.
