Paid $420 for a standing desk to fix my back and now I just stand there staring at my boss's dumb emails in comfort
I dropped $420 on an electric standing desk about 6 months back because my lower back was killing me after 8 hours in a cheap office chair at my old job in Phoenix. It genuinely saved me, my back pain went away in like 3 weeks and I stopped dreading the mornings. But here is the part that burns me: my new boss saw it, loved it, and now suddenly everyone on the team is expected to "consider" buying their own since the company won't pay for them. So I spent my own money to fix a problem their cheap furniture caused, and now I'm the poster child for why they shouldn't buy us decent chairs. I'm not even mad about the desk itself, it was worth every penny of that $420, I'm mad that it turned into free PR for a company that won't spend a dime on us. Has anyone else bought their own gear for work and then had it used against them like this?
The "poster child" part is what gets me, because honestly the real damage isn't even the money, it's that you just handed HR a live experiment proving they can skip buying desks forever. Think about it from their side: one guy fixed his own back for free, so why would they ever budget for it? The sneaky part is they don't have to say a word, they just point at you and let the guilt do the work. Tbh the move here might be to stop being the proof, mention your back is acting up again or just keep quiet when new folks ask, cause once you're the example it's really hard to un-example yourself.
