My last boss made me clock out for bathroom breaks, so I quit mid shift on a Friday

Wow, that's genuinely terrible. I had a similar situation once where a manager tried to make me clock out for a 10 minute break to use the restroom and I told them it wasn't legal. You had every right to walk out on the spot, that's not a small thing. Bathroom breaks are a basic human need and any workplace that treats adults like that doesn't deserve your time. Good for you for sticking up for yourself and leaving on your terms.

Right, but what about the people who can't afford to just walk out?

@daniel857 hit it right - clocking out for bathroom breaks is straight up illegal in most places. But here's what I'm wondering: how long was this guy's commute? If you're driving 45 minutes each way, I get why sticking it out feels impossible but walking out might screw you harder. Like @daniel857 said, some people straight up can't afford to just leave without something else lined up. Was it worth burning that check for a principle?
