Dropped $80 on a tiny label maker for my desk and now my whole office knows where the stapler lives
My boss laughed at me for a week, until he needed 40 folders labeled in one afternoon and suddenly it was the best $80 the department never paid for. I still buy my own tape refills, so tell me I am not the only one funding my own office supplies just to stay sane.

Small correction, your boss didn't need "40 folders labeled in one afternoon." He saw you do it in like ten minutes and realized he could dump the job on you. That's how it works in every office. The person who buys the good tool becomes the person who owns every task that needs that tool. Same thing happened to me when I brought in my own laminator. Suddenly every hallway pass and lunch menu was my problem. So enjoy your label maker, but know that you didn't just buy tape refills, you bought yourself a side job.
