Thought 12 miles a day was the mark of a real hiker until a guy in his 60s passed me outside Gatlinburg
He was doing 8 mile days on the AT and had made it from Georgia without a single injury, while I was icing my knee at every shelter. Turns out my mileage obsession was the problem, so what daily distance actually works for you on a long haul?
Man, that hits home. I wrecked my own thru hike doing 15s out of some dumb pride and ended up in a motel for four days with shin splints. These days 10 to 12 feels right on flats but I cut it to 8 in the mountains and my body holds up way better.
