Old timer at REI told me water filtration was overkill for the Sierras
He said the streams were clean enough without a filter and I gave it a try on a 4 day trip last August. Got giardia by day 3 and spent 2 weeks recovering. Has anyone else run into bad advice from so called experts?

Forty years of hiking and I've learned the confident ones are usually wrong.

Confident ones are usually wrong" - saw a thread where someone said the same about bear safety tips.

Yeah but @grant.nina the thing about bear safety is the people who act like they know everything are usually the ones who get into trouble... I've read enough accident reports to know the overconfident types are the ones who forget basic stuff like making noise on the trail or storing food properly. The quiet hikers who carry bear spray and actually practice with it tend to have way more sense. Real confidence comes from being prepared, not from pretending you're too tough to follow the rules.
