Cousin's wedding in Portland taught me to park a getaway car for any family party
Three years ago at my cousin's wedding in Portland, my uncle started a shouting match during the toasts about who really paid for my grandma's nursing home, and I was trapped at a table near the back with no way out. I sat there for 45 minutes while two aunts cried and a cousin I barely know tried to recruit me onto her side of the fight. Ever since that night I park my car facing the street at any family event, and I keep the keys in my pocket instead of my wife's purse. I also drive myself now, no more riding with my parents, because leaving when I want is the whole point. Two summers back at a reunion in Tacoma I slipped out after 90 minutes and nobody even noticed until I texted from the freeway. It sounds cold but I show up, I eat the potato salad, I say hi to everyone, and then I leave before the yelling starts. Now I'm wondering if I'm the only one who does this or if the rest of you just sit there and take it. How do you handle it when a party turns into a fight 20 feet from your chair?
