My car hauler got flagged for being 3 inches over on the rear axle in Virginia and I laughed on the phone
So last month I was hauling a 2011 Subaru from Fairfax down to Charlotte and pulled into a weigh station on I-81 just outside Roanoke because the sign said all commercial vehicles. Officer walks around with his little pad, comes back and tells me my rear axle is 3 inches past the legal limit on their scale. I just about lost it because I had loaded that car three different ways in the driveway that morning trying to get the tongue weight happy, and the whole time the issue was I put the spare tire and my tool bag in the trunk of the car, not the truck bed. He was actually cool about it, let me move the weight around right there in the lot, and the second weigh came back clean. What got me was the ticket would have run me $260 plus whatever the reload fees were if I had to unload it. Now I keep a cheap bathroom scale in the truck and check the tongue every single time before I roll, no exceptions. Anyone else learn a dumb expensive lesson at a scale house that could have been fixed in 4 minutes?
