I finally broke down and followed an old timer's advice about timing belts

Had a guy at a truck stop in Nevada tell me to stop stretching timing belts past 80k miles on my personal rig, even if they looked fine. Ignored him for about 18 months until one snapped near Flagstaff and cost me $1,200 in towing and parts. Has anyone else had a mechanic's gut feeling save them from a bigger headache?

That Nevada guy must've seen a few too many rigs on the side of the road with their guts hanging out... I learned the same lesson the hard way with my old F-250, thought I was saving money by pushing it to 95k because the belt looked brand new. When it let go it took out a water pump and bent a couple valves, turned a simple weekend job into a full engine teardown. Old timers have that sixth sense from decades of watching stuff fail at the worst possible times, they don't just guess at numbers. The rubber gets hard and brittle on the inside where you can't see it, especially if you run in hot climates like the Southwest. Now I just swap them at 70k and sleep better knowing I won't be stranded between nowhere and nothing.
