Critique that finally fixed my brake bleed technique

Had an old tech watch me bleed brakes last year. He said 'you're letting the pedal come up too fast, you're sucking air back in.' I was doing the pump-hold-release thing but rushing the release. Changed to slow steady pedal release over 2 full seconds. Made a huge difference. Pedal feel got way firmer after just one bleed cycle. Anyone else get a simple tip that changed a basic job?

Yeah that whole "letting the pedal come up too fast" thing is huge. I had the same problem for years until a buddy watched me and pointed it out. He said to treat the pedal release like you're trying not to spill a full cup of coffee. If you just let it snap back up, you're pulling a vacuum on the system and sucking that air right back past the bleeder screw. I started doing the slow release over a count of three Mississippi and my brakes went from spongy to rock hard in one bleed. It's such a simple fix but nobody tells you that part in the YouTube videos.

The whole "treat it like a cup of coffee" thing feels a bit dramatic to me. I mean, yeah, you don't want to snap the pedal up, but I've bled brakes dozens of times just pumping and letting it come up naturally without counting Mississippis. Never had air suck back in, never had spongy brakes after. Maybe it's different on some cars, but on my old truck and my Civic it never mattered that much. Feels like one of those tips that gets passed around until everyone thinks it's gospel.

Start by saying @parker_park8 has a point for some systems, but honestly I think that "sucking air back in" idea gets blown way out of proportion on most modern cars with decent check valves. Tbh, I've watched guys race-bleed brakes in under a minute with a power bleeder and never once count to three, and their stops are just as solid as anyone's. Ngl, if you're getting spongy brakes from pedal release speed, odds are the real issue is a bad bleeder seal, not your tempo.
