I finally realized I was sanding everything the wrong way for years

Was working on a 2015 Ford Focus last month in Houston and couldn't figure out why my primer kept fish-eyeing. My buddy came by and watched me for a minute, then asked why I was sanding in circles instead of straight lines. Felt like an idiot. He showed me how cross-hatch sanding gives a way better mechanical bond. Has anyone else had a basic technique they got wrong for way too long?

Wish someone told me that sooner, I did the exact same thing on my truck.

Ended up having to pull the whole dash apart to get to the wiring harness. Took me a whole weekend just to trace a bad ground. What finally worked for me was using a multimeter on every connection one by one. Found the problem in about 15 minutes after that. @jennysullivan, you probably already know this now, but the factory manual was useless for the specific issue I had. Youtube videos from some random guy saved me more time than anything else.
