TIL putting a wooden spoon across a boiling pot keeps it from overflowing

I was making pasta last Tuesday and got distracted by my kid yelling about a lost toy. Came back to the pot about to bubble over and remembered seeing someone do this online. Grabbed a wooden spoon, laid it across the top, and the foam just stopped. No mess, no stovetop cleanup. Anyone else got a random kitchen trick like this that actually works?

Wait, seriously? Like it just stops bubbling instantly? I have never heard of this trick before and I'm actually kind of mad nobody told me sooner. I've been standing there blowing on pots like an idiot for years. Gotta try this next time I make rice, that stuff always tries to escape. Does the type of wood matter or can it be any old spoon?

Does a wooden spoon also work if I just threaten the pot with it instead?
