That Tuesday I spent 12 hours fixing a single toilet flange in a 1920s house near St. Louis
The PVC was egg shaped from years of settling and no amount of jiggling the wax ring would have sealed it, so has anyone else dealt with cast iron drains that just won't align with modern fixtures?

...and that's exactly where the fun starts, ain't it? I've dealt with that egg-shaped PVC nightmare more times than I care to count. Old iron drains are a different breed though. They settle and shift with the house over decades, and by the time you get a new toilet flange in there the bolt holes are off by half an inch. The trick I've found that actually works is cutting out about a foot of the old cast iron pipe and using a Fernco donut to transition to a new section of PVC. Then you can install a modern flange that actually sits flat and lines up with the toilet. It's a lot more sawzall work and sweat but beats fighting that egg shape for hours.

Damn man, does the Fernco donut ever give you trouble with the offset or does it hold true?
