I thought my old shop teacher was just being cheap, then a 10 dollar part fixed a 400 dollar problem
My water heater pilot kept going out last month and the first guy I called in Kansas City quoted me 420 dollars for a new thermocouple plus a service fee. I almost said yes until I remembered my shop teacher always saying to check the cheap stuff before you buy the big stuff. I pulled the burner assembly myself, hit the thermocouple with some fine steel wool, and it has run fine for 3 weeks straight. Turns out a little carbon buildup was all it was, no new part needed. Has anyone else had a repair guy quote you something big when the fix was something you could do in 20 minutes?
