Spent 6 months handing out business cards before someone called me out

I was at a Chandler chamber of commerce mixer last March and kept shoving my card at everyone without asking what they did first. This older guy just looked at me and said 'son, you're just adding to my paper pile.' Now I ask two questions before I even reach for my wallet. Anyone else had that moment where you realized you were networking all wrong?

Buddy of mine used to run a landscaping company and spent a whole year just handing out fridge magnets at home shows. He finally had a lady look him dead in the eye and say "I throw these away the second I get home." That was the turning point where he switched to actually talking to people first before giving them anything.

Oh man, @troythompson that fridge magnet story is brutal because it's so true. I had a buddy who was so proud of his custom printed pens and handed them out like candy at a trade show until someone asked him if he realized half of them ended up in the trash before the doors even closed.
