Had a weirdly perfect week at the Phoenix Chamber mixer last month

I went to the Phoenix Chamber networking breakfast last Tuesday and got 3 solid referrals in one hour. Some guy from a roofing company heard me talking about my accounting firm and literally handed me his card. Then on Thursday I followed up with two of those leads and closed one small client for $200 a month. Has anyone else had a single event totally change their month like that?

Hold up, I gotta push back on this. One event changing your whole month? That sounds like survivorship bias to me. I've been to like 15 Phoenix Chamber mixers in the last two years and walked away with nothing but a handful of business cards from people who never answered my follow up emails. Last November I spent $40 on a breakfast, shook hands with maybe 30 folks, and got exactly zero referrals. The one time I did get a lead from an event, it turned out to be a guy who wanted me to do his taxes for free because he "remembered me from the mixer." You got lucky, but for most of us those events are just expensive coffee and awkward small talk.

That 40 bucks breakfast story really hits home, I used to think I just wasn't trying hard enough at those things but now I'm rethinking the whole approach after reading this.
