Hot take: broke a 4,000 year old pot sherd on purpose to see how it breaks, now I'm not sure I was wrong
I do contract work, so I get why hands-on beats theory, and I volunteer at a dig near Tucson. We had a plain Hohokam brownware sherd from a trash pit, no decoration, and I snapped it to study the break pattern. Half the crew said I ruined a piece of the past, the other half said sherds like that get tossed in bags by the hundreds and the fracture told us more than the pot did. What side are you on?
