That time a washer drum locked up mid-cycle in a basement with no service manual
Had a call back in March, old Whirlpool direct drive at a rental property off Route 9. Customer said it just stopped with a load of towels. Got there, no error code, drum wouldn't budge. Turns out a sock had wedged between the tub and the basket, talked my way through disassembly blind. Took 2 hours with a basic socket set. Anyone else run into a sock jam like that, or am I the only one digging fabric out of there?

Heard a similar story from a guy on a Facebook appliance group, he pulled a kids toy truck out of one on a Samsung. Said the drum made this grinding sound for weeks before it finally locked, owner thought it was the bearings. Sometimes those little gaps are bigger than you think, especially after years of wear. Two hours blind is rough though, I got lucky once and found the sock wedged right near the door boot. Guess it depends on where the balance ring sits on those old direct drives.

Two hours blind is rough" is honestly the understatement of the year, that's like playing the world's worst game of hide and seek where the prize is a sock covered in lint and regret. I swear those little gaps are designed by someone who hates repair people, like they purposely leave a tiny portal to another dimension where random objects go to die. The toy truck thing though, that's hilarious, I bet the owner was just staring at it like "how the hell did that get in there" while the truck was like "I live here now." And the grinding for weeks before locking up, yeah that sounds about right, these machines like to give you just enough hope that it's fixable before they commit to full tantrum mode. At least the door boot guy got lucky, I once spent a whole afternoon digging out a hair clip from behind the drum and my back hated me for a week. Honestly, every time I hear these stories I'm convinced washers are just giant metal stomachs that eat whatever falls in and refuse to give it back until you're at your breaking point.
