One customer's comment about 'young techs' actually fixed my approach
Had a call in Akron last Tuesday, older lady watches me pull out the multimeter and says 'you kids just guess till the part lights up.' I was annoyed at first, but she had a point. I started writing down the exact resistance readings before swapping anything, and it's cut my return trips down by about 30 percent. Has anyone else had a customer's jab turn into a better habit?
Getting called out by a little old lady stings but she wasn't wrong either. The habit that saved me was keeping a small notebook in the van and jotting down readings on every single call, even the easy ones. After a few months you start seeing patterns, like what a good compressor should read versus one that's about to quit on you. The trick is you have to write it down right when you test it, not later when you think you'll remember, because you won't. I also snap a photo of the meter with the part in frame, takes two seconds and saves me when a homeowner swears it was working before I showed up. Return trips dropped a lot for me too once I stopped trusting my gut and started trusting the numbers.
