Overheard a guy at the con say Attack on Titan is overrated and now I can't stop thinking about it

I was standing in line for a panel at Anime Expo last weekend and this dude in a Levi hoodie just blurts out that the whole show is just shock value with no real plot. It got me wondering if I've been defending it because I actually like it or just because everyone else does. Do you ever catch yourself liking something just because the hype train is too strong to get off?

@cameron538 you ever catch yourself liking a show less just because everyone kept saying how great it was? Sometimes the hype sets the bar too high and the show just cant clear it. Hard to tell if you actually liked it or if you just got tired of hearing people talk about it.

I mean, idk, sometimes I feel like if a show is actually that good, the hype just matches what's there. I remember when everyone was losing it over Better Call Saul, and I was like 'okay, it's fine but not THAT good' but then I binged the first three seasons and I was the one telling everyone to watch it. Maybe it's just me but I think some shows earn the hype if you give them a real shot instead of going in already annoyed about it.
