I finally watched an anime subbed after years of dubs and it changed the whole show for me

For the longest time, I only watched anime with English dubs. I told myself it was just easier to follow along. I started watching the new season of 'Frieren' last week, but the dub was delayed. I was impatient, so I tried the subbed version. The difference was huge. The voice acting felt way more real, and I could hear the small sounds and emotions the original actors put in that the dub just didn't have. I realized I was missing the real performance the whole time, just for a bit of comfort. It tipped me off that I was being lazy and not giving the show its full chance. Now I'm going back to some of my old favorites to hear them the right way. Has anyone else had a show get way better after switching to subs?

Totally get that feeling. The original voices just have this raw energy that dubs often smooth over. It makes the whole experience feel more genuine.

Disagree completely, @patriciap52! A good dub lets you focus on the story and action without reading subtitles the whole time.

Oh man, this debate is older than my VHS tapes. I watch with subtitles even when people speak English, half the time. Reading lines doesn't bother me, but hearing some flat dubbed voice totally does. It just sucks all the life right out of the scene. Give me the original yelling and crying any day.
