Just realized those new tamper-proof screws are actually a pain for us too
A client in Phoenix insisted on them, and it took me 45 minutes with a special bit just to open a single panel for a battery swap. I was sure they were just a sales gimmick, but they really do stop anyone without the right tools. What's your go-to method when you run into these on a service call?

Yeah, that part about them stopping anyone without the right tools is so true. I read a forum post where an electrician said he just carries a small bag with all the common security bits now. He called it his "pick your poison" kit. It adds a step, but it beats grinding a screw head or damaging the panel. Do you keep those bits on your truck, or do you try to get the client to tell you the type ahead of time?

Seriously, how much are we really stopping? I've seen kids online pick these with a bent paperclip! It just slows down honest work. Last week I had to drill out a "tamper-proof" screw on a thermostat because the special bit stripped. The homeowner said his nephew got into it with a flathead and some glue. Makes you wonder who we're keeping out.

Those bits are a lifesaver but always call ahead to ask about fasteners. A quick phone call can save you a trip back to the truck for the right tool. What's the weirdest screw type you've run into lately?
