Pro tip: I found out the actual torque spec for a common Cessna flap hinge bolt is way lower than I guessed

I was working on a Cessna 172 flap assembly the other day and went to look up the torque for the hinge bolt. I figured it'd be around 40-50 inch-pounds, but the manual from the Cessna service library said 25 inch-pounds max. I found it in the standard practices section, not the flap chapter itself. That's a huge difference and could easily lead to over-torquing and a cracked bracket if you just go by feel. Has anyone else run into a torque spec that was surprisingly low for what seemed like a beefy fastener?

My old man's torque wrench has a faded sticker that says "assume nothing." That lesson applies to everything from plumbing fittings to trailer hitches. You really can't guess how much something should be tightened, you just have to look it up.

Honestly that sticker's advice even matters for stuff like phone chargers and water bottle lids.

Assume nothing" except maybe your first guess is always wrong.
